Step Up Tutoring

Multi-quarter part-time
Education & Youth Development

Founded by Stanford students and alumni, Step Up Tutoring’s mission is to improve student success through academic support and mentorship in under-resourced communities.

Step Up Tutoring recruits, screens, trains, and matches volunteer tutors with students for twice-per-week online tutoring and mentoring. Step Up Tutoring has a five-year Memo of Understanding with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and is currently in the pilot phase serving 3rd–6th grade students. Step Up Tutoring plans to expand to serve more than 50,000 students and their families.

So far, Step Up Tutoring has:

  • Recruited and matched over 700 volunteer tutors and mentors to LAUSD students
  • Provided over 10,000 hours of free tutoring
  • Scored a satisfaction level of seven or higher with 95% of parents (on a scale of 1–10)
  • Partnered with Annenberg Learner, L.A. Works, and PledgeLA to increase tutor recruitment

How You Can Help
