Advancing education through transformative service

Students posing with a sign that says "grateful"

Cardinal Service was established in 2015 as a university-wide effort to make service an essential feature of a Stanford education.

Cardinal Service, administered by the Haas Center for Public Service, helps Stanford students connect their education to meaningful public service. Together with our campus and community partners, we’re shaping the next generation of civic leaders and creating positive change in communities locally, nationally, and around the globe.

Student engagement

Whether they’re just starting to explore service or already deeply engaged, Cardinal Service offers students multiple ways to make a difference.

  • Fully-funded, quarter-long service internships and fellowships
  • Community-engaged classes and research opportunities
  • Volunteering through student-led service organizations
  • Leadership training and opportunities to lead
  • Resources to help prepare for public service careers and find a first job in service

Every year, hundreds of students engage with communities to apply their skills, deepen their understanding of social challenges, and explore what it means to serve ethically and effectively.

“I have gained insights, tools, and frameworks that will guide me in doing impactful and equitable work in the public service field and a philosophy of ethical and effective service leadership.” — Student in ETHICSOC 79: Ethics and Leadership in Public Service

Through Cardinal Service programs, students work alongside nonprofits, government agencies, and grassroots organizations, bringing fresh energy and talent to projects that matter to our communities. Together, they address critical issues like educational equity, environmental justice, public health, and civic engagement.

“Students develop pride in designing for another individual, while users learn from the students and receive unique, personalized assistive technology.” — Abby Tamara, a community collaborator and assistive technology user in ENGR 110: Perspectives in Assistive Technology

Lifelong commitment to service

Cardinal Service programs give students skills, perspectives, connections, and motivation for lifelong service. Alumni have continued to make a difference in their communities in public service careers and as active, engaged citizens. Programs that place graduating seniors in their first public service roles provide a strong foundation for their future careers. Alumni remain involved to provide mentorship and advice for students just starting their service journeys.

“Just having access to the Gardner network is one of the most surprising and incredible components of the fellowship, with over 200 incredible alums at different points in their careers. Having that strong community once you graduate college becomes more difficult, so that’s been quite a treat and I feel lucky to be a part of it.” — Nicole Domingo, '24, a former Gardner Fellow with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
