International Collaboration Fellowship, Round 2
The Haas Center for Public Service is committed to helping Stanford students engage in meaningful public service and learning opportunities. We believe that international service learning greatly contributes to students’ global education. The International Collaboration Fellowship was designed to support students who are new to international service and/or international travel. Through our partnership with social impact organization, Omprakash, students will be supported in selecting an international organization, developing a connection with other fellows in their cohort, and deepening their thinking and learning around international service.
Approximately seven students will be accepted into this program and these students will work closely with Omprakash to select and interview for a position with a partner organization from a vetted list of organizations (you can find the list here) that represent different issue areas, job functions, and locations. In the spring, students will participate in two online “classes” with their cohort, facilitated by Omprakash instructors and centered around their international service learning and travel preparation curriculum. Lastly, International Collaboration Fellows will document their summer experiences and share them through a digital storytelling platform. See below for more details:

April 2 - All applications are due for the International Collaboration Fellowship. Students will be asked to express preferences for their top three partner organizations from a curated selection of Omprakash Partners during the application process.

Early April: Fellows are selected. With support from Omprakash administrators, fellows apply to work with organizations that align with their interests.

Spring Quarter: Students spend a total of four hours engaging in asynchronous content in the Omprakash EdGE online classroom and participating in two Zoom calls with Omprakash team members; content focuses on ethical and interpersonal dimensions of their work. With support, students also complete logistical tasks such as obtaining travel documents and developing an emergency plan.

Summer - Students are immersed in their full-time internships (35-40 hours a week for 9 weeks). Optional Zoom calls with Omprakash team members to check-in and reflect are provided. By late-August, each student spends roughly two hours working asynchronously to create a multimedia digital storytelling post that documents their internship experience through a lens informed by curricular themes. Omprakash provides pedagogical, logistical, and risk management support throughout this experience.

Late August / September: Students share their storytelling posts with one another and reflect on their experiences via a Digital Symposium event which is open to the Haas Center community as well as students’ host organizations.

Each International Collaboration Fellow receives a base stipend of $6,500 to support travel and living expenses during the fellowship for 9 weeks of full-time work. Financial aid and supplemental funding are available to students who qualify.
Please note: With limited exceptions, travel for undergraduate students is not permitted to countries, regions or cities where the International SOS travel risk rating is “High” or “Extreme.” Students will work with Haas to apply for an exemption for international locations where the International SOS medical risk is "High." Undergraduates from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply, and applicants may vary in academic interests, public service involvement, and experience. Priority will be given to students who have completed fewer than two previous Cardinal Quarter opportunities. Graduating seniors will have lower priority. Students who have begun their coterm programs are not eligible to apply.
Requirements:
The International Collaboration Fellows are required to work with their community partners at least 35 - 40 hours/week for nine consecutive weeks at their placements. Fellows are expected to work on-site with their host organization (University policies and health conditions permitting), and have a designated full-time professional staff member on-site as their supervisor/mentor. Please review the complete program policies for additional requirements. Other commitments include the following:
Spring Quarter
- Complete an online program orientation.
- Complete four hours total of online Omprakash curriculum (includes pre-reading and 2 discussions).
- Complete Engaging in Ethical and Effective Service workshop or worksheet.
- Identify and meet with academic mentor at least once.
- Design a personal learning plan and share the learning plan with site supervisor and academic mentor.
Summer
- Submit a brief preliminary report.
- Submit a digital story (will likely take you 2 hours over the course of the summer), complete a program evaluation, and correspond with fellowship donor(s) as requested by fellowships program staff.
Autumn Quarter
- Meet with academic mentor at least once.
- Attend a virtual de-briefing meeting for the purpose sharing the cohort's digital stories.
- Participate in outreach activities to share the experience and help publicize the program.
Selection Process:
For those who seek assistance, advising is available to help students develop their applications. The International Collaboration Fellowship was designed to support students who are new to international service. This fellowship is also intended for individuals whose application, reference, and interview demonstrate
- an integration of the fellowship experience with applicant’s academic, personal and/or career goals
- prior demonstrated interest or involvement in the subject area, including related coursework
- a compelling match between applicant’s skills and interests and an organization’s work and needs
- strong potential for the fellowship experience to enlarge a candidate’s understanding of an identified community issue or challenge
Complete applications are screened, finalists interviewed, and fellows selected within three weeks of the application deadline. Applicants should respond promptly (within 48 hours) via email to a fellowship offer, or the offer will be rescinded. Once an applicant accepts a fellowship offer, the student should promptly notify all other Stanford and non-Stanford programs to which they have applied that they have accepted another offer and to withdraw their candidacy. Fellows will work with Omprakash to interview for approximately three organizations so the the organization and fellow can find the best fit.
