Upward Scholars

Multi-quarter part-time
Education & Youth Development

Upward Scholars empowers low-income adults, mostly immigrants, by providing them financial and academic support so they can continue their education, get better jobs and serve as role models and advocates for their children. Upward Scholars provides students with textbooks, transportation to college, laptops, tutors and community volunteers who meet with students weekly. We are the only nonprofit in the Bay Area providing financial and academic support to low-income adults attending college part-time.

Service required by the organization to fulfill a Cardinal Commitment: The student needs to attend a 90-minute orientation and then work with his/her tutee for a minimum of 90 minutes a week during those weeks when both Cañada College and Stanford are in session. Tutors and tutees work together to find a time and location that is convenient for them both. Most tutees drive and can meet with their tutor on or near campus. At the end of each semester, tutors must complete a brief program evaluation.
