Stanford Science Penpals

Write monthly science mentorship letters to 6th-12th graders across the US

Stanford Science Penpals cover

Science Penpals is an outreach program connecting 6th-12th grade students across the U.S. with Stanford scientists to inspire curiosity, answer science questions, and share the excitement of scientific discovery. Our mission is to broaden students’ exposure to diverse STEM careers and foster meaningful mentorship through monthly letter exchanges.

Penpals must be Stanford affiliates — students in STEM programs, graduate students, or postdocs from any scientific discipline. The time commitment is low (about 45 minutes per month) but the impact is high. From October to June, penpals write and receive one letter per month, ensuring consistent, year-long engagement.

We host fun, optional letter-writing sessions (snacks provided!) with colorful stationery, markers, and stickers. For those who prefer flexibility, secure drop-off locations are available for letters anytime before each monthly deadline.

We’re also eager to collaborate with teachers to bring this program to more classrooms. If you’re passionate about making science accessible and relatable, Stanford Science Penpals is the perfect way to make a lasting impact!
