Stanford Immigration and Human Rights Law Association (SIHRLA)

Support immigration justice and human rights through pro bono legal research, advocacy, and community engagement at Stanford Law.

Stanford Immigration & Human Rights Law Association (SIHRLA) cover

The Stanford Immigration & Human Rights Law Association (SIHRLA) is dedicated to advancing the rights of immigrants and displaced communities through legal advocacy, pro bono service, and policy engagement. We provide Stanford students with opportunities to learn, practice, and advocate for immigration justice and fundamental human rights on a global scale.

Our mission is to empower students to work toward systemic change by engaging in legal research, direct service, and collaborative advocacy. SIHRLA partners with leading human rights organizations, immigration clinics, and community groups to support asylum seekers, refugees, and other vulnerable populations.

How We Serve

  • SIHRLA Action Hub (Pro Bono Legal Research & Direct Service) – Collaborating with attorneys, legal clinics, and nonprofit organizations to support asylum cases, refugee advocacy, and broader human rights work. Limited to law students only.
  • Policy & Advocacy – Hosting discussions, speaker events, and workshops to educate and mobilize students around pressing immigration and human rights issues.
  • Institutional Advocacy – Advocating for more programming, faculty hiring, and institutional support to strengthen Stanford’s commitment to immigration and human rights law.
  • Experiential Learning – Providing hands-on opportunities for students to engage with the legal and policy challenges facing immigrant and refugee communities.

Membership

SIHRLA general membership is open to all Stanford students, both graduate and undergraduate. Participation in certain pro bono projects is limited to law students, though we encourage interested students to reach out and inquire, as involvement may be possible on a case-by-case basis.
