The North Fair Oaks Community Alliance (NFOCA) is a small community organization established by community leaders in North Fair Oaks (NFO), an unincorporated community surrounded by the cities of Menlo Park, Atherton, and Redwood City. NFOCA advocates to improve life for all in North Fair Oaks (NFO). NFOCA works to engage the NFO community with the goal of increasing representation, participation and advocacy so that together the NFO community members can promote and advocate for equity, socio-economic and environmental justice.

Climate change has created new challenges, particularly for people of color and marginalized communities. Much of NFOCA’s work relates to mitigating, planning and preparing for climate change-related events, including heat waves, wildfire smoke impact, flooding and other events. Accomplishing this requires building a strong base of community participation and engagement in community activities and in decision-making processes that affect North Fair Oaks. One of our current projects is to implement a Block Action Team Program to support our community’s disaster preparedness and emergency response. This Block Action Team Program will also provide a strong foundation for building involvement in other NFOCA programs, including a current effort to plant trees in order to reduce heat impacts and improve overall community well-being.

Based on our volunteers’ availability and preference, they can work remotely or assist with hands-on community outreach in our community of North Fair Oaks, which is ~5 miles from the Stanford Campus. Volunteer work can involve creating outreach materials, content for NFOCA’s website, social media, newsletter, and/or in-person community outreach. We at NFOCA strive to create meaningful volunteer opportunities for all our volunteers.
