Music Enriching the Lives of Developing Youth (MELODY)
Provide free music lessons and weekly one-on-one tutoring for local students through Stanford and Eastside College Preparatory School.
MELODY (Music Enriching the Lives of Developing Youth) is a student-led volunteer organization based at Stanford University that provides free, individualized music instruction to local students. Founded in 1998 as part of the Stanford Alliance for Service Through the Arts, MELODY is committed to expanding access to music education in communities where private lessons and individualized instruction may be difficult to obtain.
MELODY currently runs two programs. Through our year-round on-campus tutoring program, Stanford volunteer tutors provide private lessons and music theory support to local students of a wide range of ages and musical backgrounds. In addition, MELODY partners with Eastside College Preparatory School, where Stanford volunteer tutors visit weekly to work one-on-one with individual students and support their musical growth.
Each year, MELODY includes approximately 15 Stanford tutors and serves roughly 30 local students, ranging from ages 6 to 18. Through both programs, MELODY aims to make music learning more accessible, personal, and empowering for students in the surrounding community.
Requirements
MELODY volunteers should have a background in piano. Prior teaching experience is not required, but is a plus.
MELODY volunteers must obtain a LiveScan background check (for Stanford and/or Eastside) to work with minors at that location.
