Marine Outreach for Advocacy and Learning in Students
Partner with local public schools to provide increased access to ocean education resources for students through in-person lessons, resource acquisition, and field trips
Our OrganizationThe purpose of this organization is to bridge the gap between marginalized communities and access to ocean science through hands-on educational outreach in K-12 local schools. By aligning with SDG 4: Quality Education and the UN Decade of Ocean Science’s Challenge 10, we will motivate a new generation of ocean-literate citizens to contribute meaningfully to ocean stewardship and sustainable development.
As ocean scientists, our organization addresses this disparity by introducing K-12 students from underserved neighborhoods to hands-on marine science education. We collaborate with teachers to co-create content connecting students to the marine environment. Activities include guided exploration of local ecosystems and in-class learning about marine biodiversity. Our project fosters inclusivity in education and inspires a young generation to engage with and care for our oceans, ensuring equitable access to marine science opportunities.
At Stanford, we have many opportunities to visit the local coast or spend time at Hopkins Marine Station in Monterey, but this opportunity is not accessible to everyone in the surrounding community. Although our organization was founded by graduate students in the Oceans Department at Stanford, we hope to inspire all levels of students who are passionate about this subject matter to work with us to get local youth excited about the protection of our oceans.
