Foundation for a College Education
Foundation for a College Education’s mission is to increase the number of students of color from East Palo Alto and similar communities who graduate from a four-year college or university. The vision of FCE is to create a community where higher education is attainable. By engaging both students and parents in our work, we aim to create a community of learners who are armed with the right tools and information. We serve students from 6th grade to college graduation.
We provide:
- Tutoring Services – 1:1 and group
- College Advising – 1:1
We are actively looking for:
- Tutors for middle school and high school students
- 2–3 student advisors for high school students for Fall 2021
Service required to fulfill a Cardinal Commitment
Academic Tutor
- 1–2 hours a week on a specific day (Mon, Tues, Thurs, 3:00–8:00pm; e.g., Mondays 5:00–7:00pm). Yearlong availability is preferred.
Senior Advisor
- Meet with students twice a month for 1–1.5 hours
- Attend a college app working meeting once a month where all high school seniors and advisors attend
- As needed: 1-hour Advisory team meeting (typically 4 times a month
- Served term: May–January
- Preferred: Graduate student from counseling or education programs or someone with 1 or more years of college advising experience
Service may be virtual or in-person in East Palo Alto.
Cardinal Commitment Mentor: David Mapa, volunteer and community engagement coordinator
