Code the Change is a student group that partners with non-profits to work on year-long software projects for social good. Completely student-run, the club has a successful record working on projects to track the spread of cholera across Bangladesh, to help K-12 school teachers share project ideas, and to support homeless communities across the Bay.
Code the Change leadership interfaces with non profits to find meaningful projects ready for student contribution. Once a student is accepted to our organization, they are assigned a team of approximately 6 students, each with 2 co-leads based on their expressed interest and strengths. Each team corresponds regularly with its partner organization to set realistic deadlines and understand the client need. We intentionally choose projects that require at least 2 quarters of participation so that our students and team leads feel a sense of ownership over their project and are able to develop strong, lasting relationships with their partner organizations. Upon finishing a project, students are encouraged to take on new projects, potentially as new team leads.
Service required by group to fulfill a Cardinal Commitment: Students should consistently attend meetings and respond to club communications; students should make significant contributions to the projects they are working on, including learning the necessary skills required for their projects; and students should demonstrate a desire to get to know their partner service organization and the communities they are impacting.
